Invite and remove reviewers
For community admins. How-to.
Invite codes give a person a named, revocable way in without email. Admins make and revoke them in Settings, on the Access tab.
What you need first
Section titled “What you need first”- An admin session. See Set up the first admin.
Make an invite code
Section titled “Make an invite code”- Open Settings and choose the Access tab.
- Under Invite codes, choose Create invite code.
- Fill in the form:
- Label: who it is for, up to 80 characters. It is not secret.
- Role: Reviewer or Admin. Choose Reviewer unless the person will manage the workspace.
- Valid for (hours): leave empty for no end date.
- Number of uses: leave empty for no limit.
- Choose Create code.
- The dialog “Copy this code now” shows the code. Choose Copy code and send it to the person through a private channel.
The code is shown once. It is stored only as a hash, so nobody, including you, can show it again. If it is lost, make a new one.
A short expiry and a single use suit a code you send to one person. Leave both empty for a code you share with a small team.
You can also make codes on the command line. See the command line reference.
Read the invite table
Section titled “Read the invite table”The table lists every code, newest first, with these columns: Label, Role, Created, Expires, Uses, Status and Actions. The code itself is never listed.
| Status | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Active | The code works. |
| Expired | The end date has passed. |
| Used up | It reached its number of uses. |
| Revoked | An admin ended it. |
Remove a reviewer’s access
Section titled “Remove a reviewer’s access”To end an invite code:
- In the table, choose Revoke on its row.
- Read “Revoke this invite code?”. People who signed in with it are signed out, and this cannot be undone.
- Choose Revoke code.
Later sign-ins with the code fail. Revoking twice does no harm.
People who signed in with OpenStreetMap have no code to revoke. To keep an account out, the operator sets CSO_OSM_SIGNIN_ALLOWED_UIDS to the ids that may sign in. See Sign in. You can also turn off Offer sign in with OpenStreetMap on the same tab, so the button no longer shows.
Both of these are checked when a person signs in. Neither ends a session that is already open. Such a session ends when it expires (12 hours by default) or when it has been idle too long.
Past decisions stay. Records are never edited, so a person’s earlier outcomes keep their name. See Privacy and what is stored.
Check that it worked
Section titled “Check that it worked”- A new code shows in the table with Status Active.
- A revoked code shows Revoked and has no Revoke button.
- Open a private window and sign in with the code. After a revoke, the page says “That invite code was not accepted.”
